I looked around and realized that my whole life had become everything Id worked so hard to be, and when I came back to have a regular life, I had to go find one. So I came home, took care of that, went back, finished the vocals and stuff, and before I know it, were on tour. I like to do it when I'm not on the road. Well, how do you do that and use it at the same time? And he said No, hes gotta do what hes gotta do. I didnt need any of the other affirmations. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. Drums become a lead instrument at that point. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. By the time you damp a larger drum, you'll end up with a 20" head anyway. AD: No, I haven't. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me. But for the most part, Im just glad that I didnt completely F up everything. Until you walk out there and open your mouth, and you see what you got, and then it tells you if its gonna be a fun evening or not. We came off the road for several months to work in the studio, and I thought maybe I should try some other way to keep myself feeling fit, because I was feeling tired and weird all of the time. Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. I really try to stay away from it. In my lifetime, to see another generation embrace this? A lot of times, I drive the band, not by playing every 16th note, but by playing the second, third and fourth 16th note, leaving the downbeat and the up- beat open. Im looking at it very simply. So Im really excited about getting out there and just being completely in control of whats going on, for real. So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. The video is a one-camera move. He is the major soloist in the band. And people didnt understand what that meant. RM: Didn't you use Ludwigs with the Mothers? Enjoy! In that time they developed a reputation as a force to be. But like I said, at that point, I realized I wasnt singing for, or co-writing with the guys, for critics. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. RM: Have you experimented with any electronic percussion? And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. The way I play is based on feeling-not on something I've been told to do. Bob Welch: Three Hearts Up His Sleeve It was getting annoying. They don't understand it. And George Tickner in the beginning, who was the guitar player in the band before he left, and in came myself and Jon Cain. What was the deal with that? But I don't think there are too many people in San Francisco that I want teaching me. But in the extra tagged-on piece, I cut to stage right, facing me walking offstage, over the shoulders of Jon, Neal, Ross and Steve. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? AD: In my solo, yeah. RM: You seem to have definite ideas about these things. Once you've made your name, you can go into a band, say the Jefferson Starship, and people will say, "There's Aynsley Dunbar. Still am. On 1987, The former was transformed from surly blues rock strut to an impossibly glossy radio-metal anthem, replete with a suitably over-the-top guitar solo from guest musician Adrian Vandenberg, whose own titular band had had a big hit with the ballad Burning Heart in the US in 1984. Because they said we all sounded alike. We hadnt finished the second leg of the tour. The less you play, the more they hear. We toured probably nine, ten months a year, and the other two months that were left, we were in the studio making more new music, and then wed get right back out there. I found that I liked using two bass drums. As a result, Revenge was recorded in two stages between legs of Coopers world tour. When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. RM: You also did the movie 200 Motels with Ringo and Keith Moon. Originally I was only going to play on half the record, and they were going to do the other half with another studio musician. Theyre doing what theyre doing because they feel its what they want to do, and Im doing what Im doing because its what I feel I wanna do. Those songs, and those tracks. I wanna get out, I wanna stop. And I think Jon said, Well, just take some time off, and well think, and I said Okay, fine. And I just sort of fell back into my life. One huge mag, with not one edit. When I did drink, it was in excess. 94. We really couldn't hear them a lot of the time. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. So Columbia was pushing Journey to write more commercial music? Ludwig has these cast hoops that fit perfectly. Was that the last time you saw them? Did you have to go to London? I had very mixed emotions I thought, Heres a good opportunity for me, but under the worst conditions. Asked whether the possibility of being offered the job had occurred to him, he said: Did I have a feeling it was going to go that way? I played with him for nearly three years and had a great time. I started Blue Whale, which was an 8-piece band. You forget about it if you don't play it, and most rock bands don't tend to play it. See, if you price yourself as an average session man," you get every Tom, Dick and Harry calling you up for sessions, and I'm not into doing just anybody's session. I just love it. AD: A funny thing happened with that. Cause Id called Jon to try to put it back together. Even now, I need a teacher to drive me so I practice and advance more. If you watch the [Behind the Music] documentary on VH1its pretty much one-sided, with Perry, the way they edited that thing, but there was a couple funny things that went down in that interview. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. Dunbar vented his frustration with his old band's increasingly commercial direction in a February 1979 interview with BAM, conducted after he joined Jefferson Starship. **Did you just realize at some point that you needed a frontman? I imagine it was a really good way to run away from things, for a while. I was on an ELP tour, and Carl Palmer was using a sequencer, so he had that happening. If the fill is part of the song? That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. Sure enough, I was playing a gig and they just popped in and said, we're looking for a drummer and we'd like to know if you would like to move to Lon- don and join us." I mean, wed get together with Neal, and wed all write the arrangements. Everybody went against me on that issue. How did it feel to be told that you needed to change what you were doing? It's one of those political things, part of the business, and I really shouldn't complain because I've been on a lot of records that have been hits. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. It was crazy. Which was my original motivation, back in the early 70s. **. But alot of times it's the head. Im not whining. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. There are different ways you can work it. I cant tell you when, but Im gonna get it done. It was suggested that I could tour and sit on a stool. The moment a singer gets one callus, hes finished. Im serious. AD: Sometimes I'll write out something just to remind myself at rehearsal, but I'll usually just remember it. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. But then, the grass is always greener. Just lettin the wind kinda blow through me, and just trying to figure a little bit out, how much of me is in there, still, as opposed to what I became? After not having played on stage for several months, that was a lot of stran, but after wards I felt like I could have gone on and played some more. Goddammit, we were good together. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. Everybody thinks singers are prima donnas. Did you take lessons? And I think I made a lot of really bad decisions over the years, because I was messed up like that. They were of the generation we were speaking of earlier, that newer generation of fans. I think its up to almost 50 million, now. So Herbie got his tape, and he played it for us, and he goes, This is your new singer. _[laughs] _And were all looking at each other going, Really. I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . There was a lot of stuff that we didnt agree on. But I lwould always come off stage at the end of a set feeling totally and utterly exhausted, and; I was always getting sick on the road because I would be so run down from; pushing myself to the limit all of;the;;' time. I just want to stop for a while. So February 1st was when I finally got home from the last shows, in Alaska. And he played the tape for em, and they werent sure. I would go into overdrive on certain things. . I dont know. Well, it felt great to be free. So when I hit the scene in Liverpool, I startled a lot of the drummers that were hanging around, because they hadn't heard of me and all of a sudden I was getting gigs and playing over the place. I feel in control of the situation. Another thing: I used to race bicycles when I was a kid, so I know about second wind and going into overdrive. And at that point were all thinking, Oh, wow. But before that it was ridiculous. You mentioned arguingwas there a lot of that? But he is more of a marching-type rudimental drummer. Dont crack the stone. Ronnie Wood paid tribute to former bandmate Jeff Beck, saying he was untouchable when at his best.. And theres been some that I wasnt too pleased about, but my feet had been held to the fire, slightly, so I had to. And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. And he will not allow me to have his number. Cause I thought it was silly. Fine. If you want to make a song a hit record, it's got to be clean, crisp, and to the point. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? I got ProTools, and Im working on stuff. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. You think they would have been happier if theyd made it in that prog-rock incarnation? AD: Oh yes. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. It felt so awesome, to see that song be used in that moment. Speaking to Mojo in a recent interview, Wood, . [laughs] Please. And then it felt terrible._ [laughs]_. So after Neal did his second solo album, I went to LA, and in about three weeks, I wrote Street Talk, which was a bit of a nod to the earlier band, and to the bass player whod passed, and with some great studio musicians and cowriters, we just knocked the record out and we released it. I know I'm going to do an album sometime. By that time I was actually playing rudiments better than my teacher, so all he could do was help me read music and understand it. And a lot of things we did, but the point is we were toast. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. Two summers ago I was asked by Sony to oversee the remastering of the entire catalog. **. Wow. It was a lift for me, that I emotionally needed. Read the best writing on rock music here. At first it was, yeah. Just a little bit east of the Musicians Institute. Of course, there are days when no matter how much waririing up you've done, your mind still doesn't want to do anything. The more accurately you play something and make it more defined, the better it can be used as music. [laughs] I think I needed some time off, what do you think? That was in Dallas, Texas, because I got to a sound check and realized that people were lined up outside and I had half a voice. Is it that way in England? I only know that theyve been through three guys, and Ive never heard any of em, and theres no need to. On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. The next show is sold out. We dont get along, but I love his playing. After all those years of doing everything, it didnt change my original drive, my need to get some music out there or do something creative. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. And maybe its just my opinion. Eventually he came back. Because it was such an amazing use. Rebel. Cause we didnt sound alike. But I needed to go home. This is a drag, after all this hard work. And Herbie [Herbert] had received a tape from somebody at the label, of Steve Perry. AD: No. I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. Reviewers can curse about them and reconstruct their ideas about them or give you a lousy write up, but as long as the solo went down well that night, you can't believe anything a critic says. I would say 95. They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. I called Jonathan. So I just waited, knowing it was going to happen sometime. Did you feel like you were the new guy, still, after all that? At some point, in all our lives, wed all contributed to that star on the ground. Would you saythat your style has changed over the years or is it just the difference in the music you are playing?
